The CW 'cheerleader' drama returns for a new season April 19, with an episode following 'Dan' (Matt Barr) who shoots a zombie student film production and casts the 'Hellcats' as his actors.
"Hellcats" is based on the book "Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders" by journalist/author Kate Torgovnick.
The series focuses on the life of college cheerleaders 'Marti Perkins' (Alyson Michalka), a pre-law college student who joins the school cheerleading team 'Hellcats', in order to maintain her scholarship.
"...'Marti Perkins (Michalka) a student at Lancer University, lost her scholarship and has no other choice but to join the college's cheer squad the 'Hellcats'. There she meets her new roommate and team captain 'Savannah Monroe' (Ashley Tisdale), the injured flyer 'Alice Verdura' (Heather Hemmens), her new partner 'Lewis Flynn' (Robbie Jones) and the Hellcats coach 'Vanessa Lodge' (Sharon Leal). Marti also has to deal with her financially unstable and sometimes irresponsible mother, 'Wanda Perkins' (Gail O'Grady), whom she often has to bail out of difficult situations and her best friend 'Dan Patch' (Matt Barr) who has just started dating Savannah.
Actor Tom Welling ("Smallville") teamed with Kevin Murphy to executive produce the series, (as part of Welling's ongoing deal with Warners TV). Pilot episode was written by Murphy and directed by Allan Arkush.
