The Crazy8's short film challenge was held Saturday, April 26 at 7pm, with Host Allison "Smallville" Mack @ the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts.
The "Crazy8s" concept started in 1999, when Rick Stevenson approached the Directors Guild of Canada, BC with an idea for a filmmaking challenge that would give directors the opportunity to produce a short film provided they could complete it in 8 days.Rhonda Monteith, Executive Director of DGC BC liked the idea and committed Guild staffer Andrew Williamson to develop the challenge with Stevenson. The new event would be called "Crazy 8s", with rules of the 'competition', being 8 days to produce a film, with 800 feet of film on an $800 budget. In 2000 "Crazy8s" expanded to include digital filmmaking with miniDV cameras (800 feet of film = 20-30 minutes of digital tape.)
To be selected this year, 60 film-makers pitched their ideas, over two days to a judging panel of 7 BC film industry players. After final selections, entrants were given a meeting with story editors (hosted by CBC Vancouver), a camera package and thousands of dollars worth of grip/lighting gear to work with.
New films screened @ The Centre included special guest short "The Green Film" by Andrew Williamson and official "Crazy 8s" entrants "Verna" by writer/director Jeffrey Honung, producer Stephanie Tanner, "Bethany" by writer/driector Zach Gayne, writer Alexandra Essoe and producer Jaxon Defa, "Minimum Wage: The Night Shift" by writer/director Jeremy Maeers, producer Galen Fletcher, "Nobody Special", from writer/director Robert Kirbyson, producer Tracey Nomura, "Sunday Break', by writer, director, producer Laura Dione Rooke, "After The Beep", by directors Lewis Bennett and Mark Boucher, producer Chris Eastwood, "Under Pressure": A Story Of Microscopic Stakes" by writers/directors Mike Dinsmore, Daniel DeVita and "Pi Day!" by writer/director Jon Anctil, producers Malcolm Oliver and Scott Mainwood.
