'Ozymandias': A Name You Can Trust...

'Adrian Veidt' was formerly the superhero 'Ozymandias', drawing inspiration from his hero Alexander the Great.

At the start of "Watchmen" he has retired to devote his attention to the running of his own enterprises.

Veidt is believed to be one of the smartest men on the planet, and is often accompanied by his genetically-engineered pet 'Bubastis'.

By taking an initiative to "help the world", Veidt displays a trait normally attributed to villains in superhero stories, and in a sense he is the "villain" of the series, looking on with scorn at the rest of humanity...

Goddard Starting "Mordecai" In Vancouver ?

From SneakPeek.Ca:
Director Drew "Cloverfield" Goddard's horror feature "Mordecai", aka "Cabin In The Woods" will start shooting in Vancouver March 9 for six weeks.
"Mordecai" is co-writen by Goddard and producer Joss Whedon.

"It’s genius, it’s funny, it’s got a harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities," said Goddard.

"It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time. It’s its own sub-genre, 'the cabin in the woods' and this is sort of our take on it...fresh and new."

Cast includes actors Richard "Burn After Reading" Jenkins and Bradley "The West Wing" Whitford.

"It’s really just your basic typecasting," said Goddard.

"When you need two actors to run through the woods in low-cut nighties, you immediately think of Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford..."

"Riverworld" Resurrected In Vancouver...

The TV mini-series "Riverworld" starts shooting in Vancouver April 2, adapting the books by author Philip José Farmer.

Stuart "Charmed" Gillard will direct for producer Robert Halmi.

Located millennia in the future, the 'Riverworld' is an Earth-like planet whose surface has been 'terraformed' to consist of one long river-valley, with an average depth of 1.5 miles, shallow near the shore then plunging to enormous depths towards the channel. The banks expand into wide plains then climb into jagged hills before a sheerly impenetrable mountain ridge, taller than the Himalayas. While the valley averages 9 miles in width, the river is 20 million miles long.

The story begins when the whole of humanity, from the first homo sapiens to people of the 21st century are simultaneously 'resurrected' along the banks of the river. Everyone awakens in a body equivalent to that of their twenty-five year old selves, except in perfect health and free of any previous genetic or acquired defects....

The smiley face is the symbol of 'The Comedian', one of the most despicable characters to ever appear in comic books as a 'hero'.

One of the original members of the 1940's, New York-based costumed vigilantes 'The Minutemen', Edward Blake, aka the Comedian starts off the action of the "Watchmen" movie by getting murdered, with the investigation into his death that leads 'Rorschach' on the trail of a monumental conspiracy.

"...Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar - as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury.

Leading up to the events of 'X-Men', 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' tells the story of Wolverine's epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with 'Victor Creed' (Liev Schreiber), and the ominous 'Weapon X' program.

SPARK FX '09: "Pleasantville" and "The City Of Lost Children"...

Amy Parker, from VancouverFilm.Net sends us this exclusive report from Vancouver's SPARK FX '09:

The beautiful "Pleasantville", first released ten years ago, was screened at Vancity Theatre this past Sunday night as part of the Spark FX '09 Festival.

Written and Directed by Gary Ross, the passion project was influenced by the experience of Ross’ father, also a screenwriter, who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

Although I hadn’t seen the movie since its initial release, I remembered the importance of the black & white, slowly changing to colour as the citizens of 'Pleasantville' discovered happiness and curiosity by opening up their minds to new and different ideas.

I recognized the beauty and the politics but hadn’t considered the intricacy of the effects: a real nod to how well they were used because the audience is thinking in terms of an intellectual, emotional standpoint rather than for the value of 'technique'.

This go-round, I watched the movie considering the significance of the effects - the beauty of the colours chosen; the pink cherry blossoms in the park, an old teal car parked in town and the difficulty of scenes when 'Betty Parker' (Joan Allen) is desperate to hide her flesh-tones which prompts her son 'David' (Toby McGuire) to apply her 'black & white' make up, allowing the concealment of thoughts and feelings from her husband (William H. Macy).

I loved the movie the first time I saw it but it was a great experience to appreciate it with 'open' eyes this time.

"La Cite Des Enfants Perdus" ("The City of Lost Children”) was screened on Monday night, the final night of the Spark FX '09.

It was the first time I had seen this movie from directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the imaginative pair behind the delicious "Delicatessen".

"Lost Children" was released in 1995, although it feels like it was made at the turn of the century, foretelling hope despite a bleak future ahead.

Like a Dickens' story with "Pan’s Labyrinth", "The Professional" and "Star Trek" thrown in for good measure, the film is a treat for all senses, with mesmerizing art direction and a truly fantastical use of physical effects.

The blind 'cyborgs', the strength of 'One' (Ron Perlman), the 'Siamese Twins', the visual effects of six 'clones' (played by actress Dominique Pinon) and circus-trained fleas are all the more hypnotic when filmed as though frozen in perpetual twilight.

However, for all the success of the special effects that allow your mind to be transported into the reality of this redemptive 'David and Goliath' take, it is the tender love story between One and the young street urchin 'Miette' (Judith Vittel) that touched my heart.

The film seemed so innocent and imaginative that it is tempting to share it with children but when it was released, it was rated R because of disturbing/frightening scenes.

Nonetheless, you are sure to enjoy this unique and transcendental tale...

Vancouver Casting Call for "Twilight: New Moon"...

Casting is underway in British Columbia for speaking roles in the sequel to the Portland-shot vampire feature "Twilight", titled "Twilight: New Moon", scheduled to shoot in Vancouver mid-March to May.

The open casting call is looking for Canadian First Nations/aboriginal actors interested in a speaking part in the film, playing 'werewolves'.

"New Moon" will contain parts for both male/female aboriginal actors.

Local auditions wil be held Feb. 8 in Vancouver @ Second Avenue Studios, 225 W. 2nd Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon.

"New Moon" continues the story of 'Bella Swan', her teen vampire boyfriend 'Edward Cullen' and 'native American' teen 'Jacob', who can turn into a werewolf, along with the rest of his 'tribe', in the presence of vampires.

At the auditions, potential candidates will receive script-sides and be asked to return the same day to read.

Following the monster opening of "Twilight," Summit Entertainment greenlit "New Moon", targeting the mid-March 2009 start, after the feature staked out a first-day gross of $35.7 million from 3,419 playdates.

Author Stephenie Meyer’s "Twilight" novels have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

Actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will return to play the leads in the film.

"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment," Meyer said...

The SCI FI Channel produces the Vancouver-lensed TV series "Eureka".

The premise is set in a secret town of the same name inhabited by 'uber-geniuses'.

After World War II, with Albert Einstein's help, US President Harry S. Truman authorized the construction of a residential town built in a remote area of the Pacific Northwest, to protect and nurture the country's greatest thinkers. 'Eureka' would never appear on any map and remain unknown to the public.

But in the fifty years since the town's founding, with its residents responsible for every leap in natural sciences, a number of experiments go awry...
