The "First Weekend Club" is a Vancouver-based, non-profit organization that helps build awareness for Canadian films, collaborating with distributors, exhibitors, filmmakers and publicists.FWC sponsors screenings, Q&A's with talent, film industry parties and movie alerts, encouraging members to attend opening weekend screenings of Canadian films.
According to FWC, theatre owners will extend a film's release only if the first weekend box office is strong. Currently less than 3% of films shown in theatres throughout English Canada are Canadian.
Anita Adams, Executive Director, Founder of First Weekend Club, leads a Board of Directors governing the organization, composed of nine film industry professionals (five Vancouver based, four Toronto based) including filmmakers, distributors, an exhibitor, broadcaster, marketing executive and financial guru.
