DC Conjures Up "Zatanna"

DC Comics "Zatanna" #5 will be available Sept. 15, written by Paul Dini, with interior art by Chad Hardin, Wayne Faucher and covers illustrated by Stephane Roux and Brian Bolland.

"...'Zatanna' and her cousin 'Zachary' might have their differences -- okay, they drive each other crazy -- but if they don't stick together, they'll be taken to the cleaners by one of Hell's most powerful demons, betting it all on a chance to claim Zatanna's soul.

"And in Vegas, the house always wins..."

The character of 'Zatanna Zatara' was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, debuting in "Hawkman" vol. 1 #4 (October-November 1964).

She is the daughter of magician 'Giovanni Zatara' (who appeared in Golden Age comic books) and 'Sindella', a member of the mystical 'Homo Magi' race.

She is also a direct descendant of the alchemist 'Nicholas Flamel' and the seer 'Nostradamus'.

Zatanna is a powerful sorceress whose abilities are genetic. As a tribute to her father and as a focal point, she casts spells by speaking verbal commands backwards.

On rare occasions, she has cast spells by writing them in her own blood.

In the Vancouver-lensed CW TV series "Smallville", the character was played by Canadian actress Serinda Swan.
