VIFF Film & TV Forum: New Filmmakers' Day...

The Vancouver International Film Festivals' 22nd Annual Film and Television Forum builds to a climax with New Filmmakers’ Day (NFD), September 29, showcasing a line-up of award-winning film professionals, in the only event of its kind in Western Canada.

Following his film's launch at this year's Opening Night at the Toronto International Film Festival, Jeremy Podeswa, director of "Fugitive Pieces" brings his insight to 'Anatomy Of A Scene', with an insider's scoop on two scenes from the film that created unique challenges for him. Podeswa is currently prepping for the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks TV-mini "Pacific".

New Filmmakers’ Day also presents 'Blissful Union: The Cinematographer and Production Designer Relationship'. BAFTA/American Society of Cinematographer DP Philippe Rousselot has worked with directors Robert Redford, Neil Jordan, Sydney Pollack and Stephen Frears. At the forum, he will discuss artistry and interplay with Alex McDowell, Production Designer for Spielberg’s "Minority Report", David Fincher’s "Fight Club" and Tim Burton’s "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory".

New Filmmakers’ Day also ventures into indie filmmaking, exploring people-powered financing/distribution with 'Fast Forward: Filmmakers Seize Control'. From generating buzz to financing a feature through social networking sites, more films are being financed outside the box of studios and mini-majors. Leading the way is Lance Weiler, whose first feature "The Last Broadcast" is noted as the first all-digital motion picture released theatrically. With Weiler's alternate reality game "Head Trauma" reshaping paradigms of entertainment, this seminar is for emerging filmmakers seeking unique strategies for success.

Also featured is Arin Crumley, director of "Four Eyed Monsters", a film invited to 20 film festivals, nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards and screened theatrically while managed/distributed by its sole creators.

The 22nd Annual Film and Television Forum happens in the Rogers Industry Centre @ the Vancouver International Film Centre/Vancity Theatre, 1181 Seymour Street, September 26-28.

New Filmmakers’ Day is September 29th.

There's Hope For "Rambo: First Blood"...

Over 25 years have passed since "First Blood" wrapped filming in Hope, British Columbia, but local residents and 'Rambo' enthusiasts agree it doesn't feel like a quarter century has passed.

Back in 1981, BC's film industry was in its infancy when the Ministry of Tourism's Film Promotion Office, helmed by Dianne Neufeld and Justis Greene, received a call from a production company interested in shooting director Ted Kotcheff's "First Blood", a $15 million action feature in British Columbia.

After scouting several different locations in BC, the producers found the exact look they had been searching for in the small town of Hope.

Soon after, a crew of approximately 100 people (many of whom still work in the local industry) began to transform the town into the birthplace of a man who would become the deadly Viet Nam vet 'John Rambo'.

The Sheriff's Office was constructed on the lawn of Hope's District Hall, a gun shop and gas station were built and American flags, mailboxes and US Army billboards were placed along downtown streets.

During filming, cast/crew had to deal with a bitter cold snap, the theft of over 50 firearms, Stallone's injuries and the escape of a wild boar on its way to set.

Despite these challenges, "First Blood", released Friday October 22, 1982 was a major box office success, earning back its production costs within weeks of its release.

To mark the film's 25th anniversary, the Hope Visitor Centre & Museum Complex is celebrating the occasion with events and activities over the Thanksgiving long weekend, starting October 5th.

The anniversary plans currently include a welcome reception, a special screening of the REEL PLACES "First Blood" travelogue/doc by Seattle's Gas Light Alley Entertainment, film location tours, a 'Rambo' look-a-like contest, an art competition, a pig roast dinner and the publication of a collectible "First Blood" booklet.

Val Mason, Managing Director, PAL Vancouver

PAL Vancouver is modelled after Toronto's PAL Place, with plans in development for additional residences in Calgary, Halifax and Stratford.

Dancer/Artist Lorna Schwenk

In March 2004, the City of Vancouver selected PAL to operate a $17.25 million housing project on the Bayshore Development site, with residents in the performing arts, earning less than $35,000 a year, qualifying for rental subsidies.

To fulfill their mission of subsidizing people in need, PAL continues to raise funds. In addition to acquiring grants and donations, PAL's fund-raising efforts include rooms, elevators and common areas named in honour of donors, a daycare on the second floor and a 100-seat public theatre on the eighth floor for staging productions and workshops.

Actor Don Kline

While salmon steaks grilled on the outdoor barbeque, we talked with dancer/artist Lorna Schwenk, actor Don Kline, "Street Legal" designer Joseph Pothier, dancer Denise Lonewalker (pitching her upcoming 3-part dance show "The Raven") and chatted with husband/wife production team, Zoltan and Natasha Buday, who outlined their development of the upcoming $5 million horror feature "The Preacher Man"...

Lost and Found...

The following is an official press release from Warners, regarding the Vancouver-shot "Lost Boys 2: The Tribe":

Corey Feldman returns to familiar turf in the Warner Premiere event, “Lost Boys 2: The Tribe,” the direct-to-DVD sequel to the 1987 cult hit “The Lost Boys” that also features his fellow Frog Brother, Jamison Newlander, along with Tad Hilgenbrink, Autumn Reeser and Angus Sutherland. The announcement was made today by Diane Nelson, President, Warner Premiere.

Principal photography began in late August on location in Vancouver, under the direction of P.J. Pesce. This sequel takes us to the shady surf city of Luna Bay, California, where vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Into this dark world arrive Chris Emerson (Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Reeser). Having just lost their parents in a car accident, the siblings move in with their eccentric Aunt Jillian and become new prey for the locals’ way of life. When Nicole unwittingly falls for a local vampire, Chris must locate and destroy the gang’s lifeline before his sister’s transformation is complete; to do this Chris finds himself relying on the expertise of none other than Edgar Frog (Feldman). Subtle references to characters from the original film, and cameos from returning actors offer homage to the Lost Boys legend and set a sinister tone of impending doom.

“Last year when Warner Premiere was established, we knew we wanted to engage with fans of The LOST BOYS and have this title on our slate because the original is a favorite film of so many people,” said Nelson. “With Hans Rodionoff’s strong script, and PJ onboard to direct, we were able to realize this project quickly, casting up-and-coming talent like Autumn, Tad and Angus, as well as key players from the original with Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander returning as the infamous Frog Brothers. We have tremendous respect for Joel Schumacher’s original film and are striving to maintain the tone and integrity of the original, while offering something fresh to old and new fans alike.”

Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander are set to reprise their original roles of Edgar and Alan Frog, respectively, in the vampire-centric sequel. Feldman shot to fame in the mid 1980’s starring in a number of successful films like “The Goonies,” “Stand By Me,” “License To Drive,” and two chapters of the “Friday the 13th” series. Following the success of “The Lost Boys,” Feldman also had a successful run with several television and music projects. Currently, Feldman is headlining a reality series on A&E called “The Two Coreys.”

“I am truly excited to be on board for this sequel,” says Feldman. “After reading the latest script I genuinely believe we can deliver a sequel the fans can sink their teeth into. I also commend Warner Premiere on their choice to include Jamison Newlander. Edgar Frog has been laying in wait for 20 years to stake some more vampires and that is exactly what he intends to do with his brother Alan by his side.”

Jamison Newlander is back as Alan Frog, the other half of the vampire-slaying Frog brothers, in the sequel. Newlander most recently wrote, directed, starred in and produced a comedy short called “The Rooster.”

Autumn Reeser stars as Nicole, a teenager who moves to Northern California and finds herself entangled with a gang of vampires. Reeser most recently starred on Fox’s hit teen drama “The O.C.” Her additional television credits include “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Cold Case,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Grounded for Life” and “George Lopez.” Reeser also appeared in “The Girl Next Door,” opposite Elisha Cuthbert and Emilie Hirsch.

Tad Hilgenbrink portrays Nicole’s brother, Chris, who – along with his sister – falls in with the dangerous gang of vampires. Hilgenbrink is best known for his role as Matt Stifler in “American Pie Presents: Band Camp.” He will next be seen in the horror film “30 Days of Night.”

Angus Sutherland, half-brother of “Lost Boys” star Kiefer Sutherland, stars as the leader of the gang of surfing vampires, echoing Kiefer’s ‘David’ from the original film. Sutherland appeared on the CBS political drama “Commander in Chief” and will next be seen in “Familiar Strangers,” due out later this year.

Screenwriter Hans Rodionoff is no stranger to the vampire genre, as writer and director of 1998’s “Sucker: The Vampire.” Other credits include co-writing TV’s “Saint Sinner,” based on a story by Clive Barker, and shared writing credits with director Mort Nathan on “National Lampoon’s Bag Boy,” slated for release in 2007.

P.J. Pesce is an independent filmmaker who has earned several accolades for his work through the festival circuit. In 1994, Pesce was named Best Independent Director of the Year at the Hamptons International Film Festival for his critically acclaimed film “The Desperate Trail,” which he wrote and directed. He also received a Special Grand Jury Award for his short film “The Afterlife of Grandpa” at the Houston International Film Festival in 1989. Pesce is the recipient of Grey Advertising’s Student Filmmaker Award and a Presidential Fellowship from Columbia University’s School of the Arts.

Basil Iwanyk and Phil Goldfine are producing the film, with Mary Viola, Alison Semenza and Rick Benattar serving as executive producers.

“Lost Boys 2: The Tribe” is a Warner Premiere production, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and distributed by Warner Home Entertainment.
